METHOD GUIDE

How to plan a coast weekend with tides, waves and weather in the right order

A repeatable workflow for choosing the day and time first, then checking live ocean context and official alerts.

Start with the non-negotiable

If your goal is tidepooling, start with daylight low tide. If it is photography, start with sunrise/sunset overlap. If it is wave viewing, start with the live and forecast wave layer.

Then use short-range weather

NWS hourly guidance is useful inside its published horizon. Do not replace it with a made-up 30-day weather score.

Check what changed today

Observed-vs-predicted water level and current buoy readings can make today look different from a purely astronomical calendar.

Compare two coasts

If two destinations are realistic, compare their live source state instead of optimizing one location in isolation.

Recheck before departure

Conditions and alerts change. A saved My Coast list is useful because it makes the final recheck a two-minute task instead of another research session.
